HISTORY.
The Norwegian Buhund, also known as the Norsk Buhund, originated in Norway.The Norwegian Buhund has a long history. Around 1000 AD, Vikings were being buried with their most treasured possessions, including these dogs who had, in life, served them well as herders, traveling companions, and guards. Norway continued to treasure the breed and began hosting Buhund shows in the 1920’s. Today, they are often a breed chosen to be trained in order to working with special needs individuals.
It is a medium sized Spitz-like dog that was used to guard and herd on the farm. This dog can be found in good numbers in England and Australia.
SIZE.
The ideal shoulder height for dogs is 35-43cm (14-17 in).
GENERAL APPEARANCE.
The Norwegian Buhund is a cute arctic breed. A small round head starts off this adorable and unique looking breed. From their face is a long rectangular muzzle. Large round eyes make up most of the breed’s face. Sitting on top of their head are two huge bat-like ears which are very big in comparison with their head. A thick neck with loose folds of skin leads to broad shoulders and very deep chest. From their body comes four long muscular legs that stop at small rounded feet. Sitting tightly curled up on their back is their fluffy tail. A thick double-coat which is very fluffy covers this breed
TEMPERAMENT.
The Norwegian Buhund is a brave dog, companionable with people, and does well with children, and so if often thought of as an ideal family pet. It is also an intelligent, energetic, and sometimes stubborn dog that doesn't enjoy being left alone and idle all day He will bark. Early training is recommended.
COLOURS.
Wheaten (biscuit) :Ranging from rather light to yellowish red. With or without dark tipped hairs, but must not influence the main colour. Mask permitted. Clean and bright colour preferred. As little white as possible.
Black :Preferably self coloured (without too much bronzing). As little white as possible.
